Former GEO Hair Lab employee says he hasn't been paid - WVLT.TV

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- A Knoxville hair salon closed its doors at the end of November, and employees said they have not been paid for their last two weeks of work.

GEO Hair Lab opened in 2015 and called itself an "eco-salon" that recycled its products.

Its website, which is still running, says, "GEO is an inventive, cruelty-free, and sustainable hair salon nestled in an industrial renovation in the heart of “downtown north” - Knoxville, Tn's historic district."

According to the site, its owner, Jeremy Wann, "aspired to produce a high-end, vibrant and well-educated hair space that functions without comprising health or environment."

One of Wann's former employees, Aaron White, said he worked at the salon for more than three years. Just days before Thanksgiving, White said he found out from a coworker that the salon was closing.

White told WVLT that he hasn't received a paycheck for his last two weeks of work and that the closure was a shock.

"It's very unsettling. You go in, and you're working for this great salon and you have a great clientele, and we're always busy. And then all of a sudden you're closing, and you're just like, 'Okay, what happened?'" said White.

The salon faced criticism from some alleged customers, too, who took to social media to say they were unable to use gift cards after the shop closed.

On Reddit, a user claimed that the salon had a "flash sale" on gift cards, which users were not able to use before the salon closed.

A spokesperson for the Better Business Bureau said they've heard from several people who purchased gift cards from the salon. He said, shortly after they were purchased, the salon closed.

The BBB spokesperson, Tony Binkley, tells WVLT's Ashley Bohle in this case there's really nothing they can do with this particular situation except to help warn others from similar circumstances and ways to protect themselves.

"One of the things that we recommend is when you buy gift cards is to try to buy those with a credit card because it gives you some recourse. You've got about 90 days if something doesn't work out," said Binkley. "Where with a debit card or cash that money is typically much harder to recover, if not impossible altogether."

If you were one of those customers, go here to file a complaint.
