Nothing is more frustrating than waiting for your hair to grow. While we all know you can't transform into Rapunzel overnight, there are steps you can take to help speed up the process of growing your strands.
We spoke with hair guru and founder of 3''' More Inches, Michael Van Clarke, to quiz him on his top tips and tricks. Here's his tips on how to grow hair faster along with a few editor's picks...
Get regular trims
"Regular trims keeps ends thick and healthy to sustain further growth," said Michael. "The hair thins and decays towards the ends as it grows. If split ends are allowed to develop then they can travel up the hair shaft and the hair becomes even thinner and more damaged," he explained.
Depending on your hairstyle and the condition of your hair, we're talking every 3-8 weeks. "Whilst super healthy hair can be left for longer (shape permitting), once ends starts to dry out it’s better to trim frequently - two steps forward one step back. Hair will grow much quicker and healthier that way."
Sleep on silk
The Good Housekeeping beauty team are big fans of 100% silk pillowcases for many hair and skin benefits. "The silky fabric creates a smooth surface for your hair to glide over, and with less friction, snagging and frizz," said Beauty Editor, Gillian Davies. While expensive, you don't need a full set - simply treat yourself to one in the same colour as your bedding.
Turn the heat down
According to Michael, healthy hair is 97% protein and 3% water when it leaves the scalp. "Excessive heat styling is probably the most common factor in causing thinning, split ends and breakage," he explained. On days that you can get away with it, let your hair air dry, but when you have to turn to heat try to do so on the lowest heat settings possible.
Pop a protein pill
When I lost my hair postpartum, I turned to Philip Kingsley PK4 Tablets to help boost growth and strengthen my hair. I committed to a three month programme and within the first few weeks I noticed a difference; my hairline was worst hit but hair started growing at a faster rate and it was stronger and less prone to breaking off.
Make like a masking pro
When it comes to finding the right mask or treatment, go for one with cashmere proteins. "These are the amino acids most alike to human hair and are fine enough to be absorbed," explained Michael. "They protect the hair and massively slow down the natural ageing process and thinning of the hair shaft." You can find them in Life Saver.
