A British woman is lamenting the loss of her “lovely, long blond hair” after her head erupted in flames when she tried to blow out a candle, leaving her with horrific injuries, according to a report.
Emily Fairbrass, 25, a veterinary nurse, was leaning over the flame when her long hair ignited in Sittingbourne, Kent, and spread to her neck, face and head, according to The Sun.
After extinguishing the blaze, the young woman ran to her neighbor’s house and called emergency services.
“I can honestly say my neighbors Janice and John saved my life. I have sent them flowers and chocolates, but words cannot say how much I owe to them,” said Fairbrass, who suffered third-degree burns.
“I cannot thank them enough. All of a sudden I was surrounded by firefighters and ambulances,” she said. “It all happened so quickly. I never knew something like blowing out a small candle in my dining room could result in this.”
Fairbrass continued: “I just kept shouting, ‘My hair! My hair!’ I had lovely, long blond hair. It is the only real thing I like about myself.”
Paramedics rushed her to Medway Maritime Hospital before she was transferred to a burn unit at another facility.
“It hasn’t put me off lighting a candle, but especially at this time of year, I would like to thank others,” she said. “If you are going to have candles then be very cautious where you put them and just be cautious.”
Fairbrass said she wants to go back to work but was told she needs more time to recover and avoid infection.
“I have also got to face the emotional and physical side of things,” she said, adding that her “hair is gradually growing back.”
